According to Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston, the Red Sox have discussed a long-term contract extension with shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

While there have been talks between the two parties, they never came close to an agreement. The 26-year-old is set to earn $12 million in 2019, his final season before hitting the free agent market. Bogaerts had a breakout season offensively in 2018, slashing .288/.360/.522 with 23 homers, 103 RBI and eight stolen bases while helping to lead the Red Sox to a World Series title.

According to Jon Heyman of Fancred, the Yankees are finalizing the trade that would send Sonny Gray to the Reds.

The Reds balked at the Yankees' insistence on including catching prospect Tyler Stephenson in the deal. Instead, they'll receive second base prospect Shed Long, a draft pick and perhaps another lower level prospect that hasn't been identified yet. It certainly looks like this deal will happen, everything just needs to be finalized before it becomes official.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Brewers have interest in bringing back free agent southpaw Wade Miley.

The 32-year-old southpaw was terrific for the Brewers last season, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 50/27 K/BB ratio across his 80 2/3 innings. At the right cost, he could add some much-needed depth to the Brewers' rotation.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Phillies maintain interest in free agent third baseman Mike Moustakas.

As Heyman notes though, their interest in Moustakas is likely entirely reliant on how their pursuit of Manny Machado turns out. The 30-year-old slugger hit .251/.315/.459 with 28 homers and 95 RBI in 152 games between the Royals and Brewers in 2018.

According to Jon Heyman of Fancred, the Twins' one-year contract with Martin Perez is for around $3.5 million.

As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported, the deal also includes a team option for a second season. It's unclear if the Twins are interested in Perez as a rotation option, or if they envision him working out of the bullpen.

Cardinals' minor league outfielder Justin Williams announced Saturday that he fractured and dislocated fingers on his right hand when he got upset and punched a television.

The 23-year-old outfielder, who came to the Cardinals from the Rays in the Tommy Pham trade, admitted that he made "a silly mistake" and that he now has to "work much harder" to achieve his goals. Williams hit .252/.307/.379 with 11 homers and 57 RBI in 115 games at Triple-A between the Rays and Cardinals in 2018.

Cardinals' general manager John Mozeliak said Saturday that while he imagines a role in the club's bullpen for Dakota Hudson, it's a mistake to rule him out as a starter.

Hudson will be stretched out as a starter at the beginning of the spring, and then likely shift to the bullpen in March as the team's final roster becomes more defined. The 24-year-old hurler did a nice job out of the Cardinals' bullpen in 2018, compiling a 2.63 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 19/18 K/BB ratio in his 27 1/3 innings of work.
Jan 19 - 5:11 PM

Cardinals' general manager John Mozeliak said Saturday that left-hander Brett Cecil has experienced significant weight loss and strength gains as a result of his offseason training program.

The Cardinals are hopeful that this well help the 32-year-old hurler bounce back from two very disappointing seasons. Cecil registered a cringe-inducing 6.89 ERA and 1.96 WHIP over 32 2/3 innings in his 40 appearances for the Cardinals in 2018.
