Robin Lehner has been selected as the first star of the week.

Erik Karlsson (lower body) won't play in Monday or Tuesday's games.

Those are the Sharks' final two contests before the All-Star break. It seems likely that Karlsson will also miss the All-Star Game given the circumstances, but the Sharks haven't said he can't play. "I have no idea what’s going on with that," Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said. "I just want to get him healthy. If he’s healthy enough, I would hope he’ll play and I know he would play. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that he’s healthy enough to play." Karlsson has three goals and 43 points in 47 games in 2018-19.

Mitch Marner practiced on the top line with Auston Matthews during Monday's practice.

Marner is typically on a line with John Tavares, but the Maple Leafs have been struggling lately, so things have gotten mixed up. This could be an effort to spark Matthews, who has no goals and three assists in his last seven games. Patrick Marleau rounds out that top line. Zach Hyman and Kasperi Kapanen practiced with Tavares.

The Edmonton Oilers have placed Ryan Spooner on waivers.

Amazing. In a vacuum, putting Ryan Spooner on waivers might not be a shocking move. True, the fact that he's in the first season of a two-year, $8 million contract makes it awkward, but he has just two goals and three points in 24 games with Edmonton while averaging 9:47 minutes, so it's a justifiable decision. Keep in mind though, that Edmonton traded Ryan Strome to get Spooner in November and Strome was the player Edmonton got in exchange for Jordan Eberle back in June 2017. So in less than two years, Edmonton turned Eberle into basically nothing, at least in terms of NHL value, through a series of one-for-one trades.

Teuvo Teravainen has signed a five-year, $27 million contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Teravainen's new deal, which goes through the 2023-24 campaign, will have an average annual value of $5.4 million per season. "Teuvo has improved every year of his NHL career and has established himself as a cornerstone forward for the Hurricanes now and into the future," said GM Don Waddell. "He has shown that he is capable of adapting and expanding his role with our team, becoming a key penalty killer for Rod this season. He's still just 24 years old and we believe he will only continue to grow as a player." He generated 64 points in 82 games last season and has 39 points through 48 matches this year.

Boston hopes Tuukka Rask (concussion) can recover over the team's break.

"I don't want this to come out of context, but the timing is probably the best it's ever going to be, right?" coach Bruce Cassidy said. "If you're going to have this injury because you do have nine days before you play again, so for any player. But there is no good timing, having said that, because who knows how it'll play out for him. So it's unfortunate." Rask suffered a concussion on Saturday, but the Bruins don't play again until Jan. 29.

Leon Draisaitl scored two goals and assisted on another in Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

It looked like the Oilers would head into the third period down 6-1 but Draisaitl scored off a two-on-one rush with 19 seconds left in the second frame. He then started the final period with the secondary assist on Zack Kassian’s goal just 14 seconds into the period before making the game interesting with a power play goal seven minutes later. Draisaitl has picked up 29 points in his last 21 games, bringing him to 26 goals and 59 points in 49 games this season.

Nino Niederreiter scored two goals in Sunday’s 7-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Niederreiter opened the scoring after Sebastian Aho found him trailing into the zone, firing off a quick shot to beat Cam Talbot. Carolina’s new Swiss winger then ended Talbot’s night, this time doing great work to out-muscle an Oiler before sneaking one through Talbot’s pads, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. It’s the 26-year-old’s first two goals as a Hurricane, bringing him to 11 goals and 25 points in 48 games this season.

Updating a previous post, Michael Ferland will not dress on Sunday night against the Edmonton Oilers.

He missed the morning skate because he "didn't feel great" and skated out during warmups, but he is listed as a scratch on the official NHL roster report. We'll hopefully get an update post-game on his status. Haydn Fleury will draw into the lineup as a seventh defensemen.

Elias Pettersson produced one goal and one assist in Sunday's 3-2 win against Detroit.

Pettersson opened the scoring with his 23rd goal of the season at the 10:16 mark of the first period. He also had the primary helper on Bo Horvat's game-tying goal in third frame. Pettersson played the for the first time since Jan. 3 in the contest after recovering from a knee injury. Brock Boeser picked up two assists in the contest, while Antoine Roussel supplied the game winner.

Robin Lehner stopped all 19 shots he faced in a 3-0 win over Anaheim on Sunday.

Lehner only had five shots to deal with the first period and six in the third frame en route to his third shutout of the season. He has registered wins in each of his last three starts and he emerged victorious in 11 of his last 12 decisions.
