Angels designated RHP Miguel Almonte for assignment.

This move was made to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Cody Allen, whose signing became official on Sunday. Almonte, 25, appeared in eight games out of the Angels' bullpen in 2018, registering a troublesome 10.29 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 7/3 K/BB ratio across seven frames. He could pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to serve as minor league bullpen depth for the Angels.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that no resolution is expected on Sunday for the potential trade that would send Sonny Gray to the Reds.

The Reds have been given a 72-hour window to negotiate a contract extension with the right-hander, which runs until late in the day on Monday. Rosenthal notes that it's unclear if the two sides would still agree to a deal if the Reds are unable to work out an extension with Gray, or if the return package would be different.

Miles Mikolas said Saturday that he's interested in working out a long-term contract extension to remain in St. Louis.

"It’s something that the Cardinals and my agency have to work out – if the numbers work out and everything turns out to be it’s absolutely something that could happen", Mikolas said Saturday. The two sides are expected to discuss the extension at some point this spring. The 30-year-old was outstanding in his return to the big leagues, going 18-4 with a 2.83 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 146/29 K/BB ratio across 200 2/3 innings.

Rafael Devers acknowledged Saturday that he's fully healthy and noticeably slimmer than he was during the 2018 season.

Devers told fans at their annual Winter Weekend event, "I feel healthy right now... I think I’m in a good place. Last year, I had a lot of injuries and I think it was a product of the weight. Thankfully, I feel much better now and I’ve been focusing on it a lot more this offseason." The 22-year-old also hired a nutritionist this offseason and has also worked hard on improving his overall conditioning.

Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic writes that the Cubs have "bandied about the idea of trading Ben Zobrist this offseason."

Zobrist is set to play an integral role for the Cubs again in 2019, particularly early on in the season while Addison Russell serves the remainder of his suspension. That said, the team has evidently considered trading him for bullpen help and payroll space. However, it does not appear at this point that any deal involving Zobrist is close. The veteran utility player will turn 38 in May and is slated for free agency after the upcoming season. He'll earn $12.5 million in 2019.

Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports reports that the Reds are among about 10 teams that are showing interest in Shawn Kelley.

Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reported earlier Sunday that the Red Sox were also in on Kelley. Kelley will turn 35 in April and has an extensive injury history, but he's consistently piled up strikeouts when on the mound. He'll be a good middle reliever somewhere if he can stay healthy.

Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports reports that the Dodgers, Giants, Angels, Phillies and Rays are among the teams pursuing Josh Harrison.

The Rangers have also been previously connected to Harrison. The Pirates used Harrison almost exclusively at second base last season, but his ability to play all over the field makes him a fit on just about any club. The 31-year-old batted an uninspiring .250/.293/.363 over 97 games in 2018.

Angels signed RHP Cody Allen to a one-year, $8.5 million contract.

He can earn an additional $2.5 million in games finished incentives. Allen didn't have an ideal walk year with a 4.70 ERA for the Indians, but he misses a lot of bats and has a good shot at a bounce-back season if he can stay healthy. He's in line to serve as the Angels' closer.
Jan 20 - 1:25 PM

Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports that the Red Sox "have been in contact" with Shawn Kelley.

Cotillo says that the Red Sox are in active discussions with multiple free agent relievers and the team is hoping to sign someone to a contract in the $2-3 million range. Kelley's velocity was down in 2018, but he still managed to post a 2.94 ERA and 50/11 K/BB ratio over 49 innings. Cotillo lists Brad Brach, Greg Holland, A.J. Ramos, Justin Wilson and Oliver Perez as other possible targets for the Red Sox and adds that Sergio Romo and Adam Warren "are not likely to land in Boston."

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Dodgers have been discussing Joc Pederson in possible trades, and the White Sox are "one of clubs in those conversations."

Jason Kinander of FanSided was first to report that the two sides were talking. The White Sox really need outfield help, so it's not a surprise that they would have some interest in Pederson. It's also not a surprise that the Dodgers are fielding offers for the outfielder, as they appear interested in balancing out their left-handed-heavy lineup. Rosenthal adds that it's "not known if talks are advanced to point where teams are close to a deal." Pederson is under team control through 2020.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that a possible delay in the announcement of the Sonny Gray trade is that the Reds might be trying to sign Gray to an extension.

Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports has confirmed that extension talks between the two sides are indeed taking place. Rosenthal notes that the trade between the Yankees and Reds could still be completed even if a contract extension isn't agreed to, but Gray might be more amendable to a long-term deal with Cincinnati because of a reunion with former college pitching coach Derek Johnson.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Dodgers are "in discussions" with A.J. Pollock.

It's a follow-up report from Rosenthal, who had noted previously that the Dodgers had interest in the free agent outfielder. Pollock would provide the Dodgers with a right-handed bat to add to a left-handed-heavy lineup and allow them to play Cody Bellinger more at first base if that's what they'd prefer. While Pollock's injury history is a concern, Rosenthal correctly notes that the Dodgers could deal with his absence more easily than most clubs due to their depth and versatility.

According to Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston, the Red Sox have discussed a long-term contract extension with shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

While there have been talks between the two parties, they never came close to an agreement. The 26-year-old is set to earn $12 million in 2019, his final season before hitting the free agent market. Bogaerts had a breakout season offensively in 2018, slashing .288/.360/.522 with 23 homers, 103 RBI and eight stolen bases while helping to lead the Red Sox to a World Series title.

According to Jon Heyman of Fancred, the Yankees are finalizing the trade that would send Sonny Gray to the Reds.

The Reds balked at the Yankees' insistence on including catching prospect Tyler Stephenson in the deal. Instead, they'll receive second base prospect Shed Long, a draft pick and perhaps another lower level prospect that hasn't been identified yet. It certainly looks like this deal will happen, everything just needs to be finalized before it becomes official.

Jon Heyman of Fancred reports that the Brewers have interest in bringing back free agent southpaw Wade Miley.

The 32-year-old southpaw was terrific for the Brewers last season, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 50/27 K/BB ratio across his 80 2/3 innings. At the right cost, he could add some much-needed depth to the Brewers' rotation.
